The Origin Story

How a team that already existed became the GTG Collective.

We didn't assemble a team. We already were one.

Most of us came up together inside the same organization at the senior level — Greenpeace USA. We ran development, operations, finance, HR, digital, and field programs. We didn't just work in the same building. We built departments together, managed crises together, and held each other accountable for results.

When we moved into independent consulting, we kept working together. Not because someone assembled us into a team — because we already were one.

GTG Collective formalized what already existed: a network of operators who share operating language, trust, and the muscle memory of cross-functional collaboration.

The Evidence

Pre-built teams consistently outperform assembled groups.

Why pre-built teams outperform

Research published in Management Science, the American Economic Review, and Organization Science consistently shows that teams who have worked together before outperform assembled groups — by as much as 10-14% on outcomes, while using fewer resources. In crisis conditions, the advantage increases.

In the nonprofit sector, the advantage is critical. Nearly 90% of nonprofit leaders are concerned about burnout — and executive isolation during transitions is a primary driver. Organizations investing in leadership pipelines and peer networks see higher retention and better mission outcomes.
